ICD-10-CM is for diagnosis coding and ICD-10-PCS is the inpatient procedure coding system (for use in U.S. inpatient hospital settings only). These coding systems will replace ICD-9-CM and be implemented on October 1, 2014. The change to ICD-10 does not affect CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) coding for outpatient procedures.

At this time ICD-10 programs are directed at people who already hold medical coding credentials, or have verified training in ICD-9, and are usually presented as CEU (professional development) courses or exams.
