  • Miami, FL (1888PressRelease) October 29, 2013 - Centro Mater Child Care Services, Inc., a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides quality care and education for economically disadvantaged children and families-announced it has been awarded the 2013 Nonprofit Organization of the Year Award by the South Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (SFLHCC). The accolade recognizes Centro Mater as one of the most significant organizations within Miami-Dade County focused on the welfare of children.

    The award will be presented to a representative of Centro Mater Child Care Services, Inc. during the SFLHCC's 19th annual Sunshine Awards. The event is scheduled to take place Nov. 1 at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables.

    Centro Mater Child Care Services, Inc. was founded in 1968 by Mother Margarita Miranda Otero-a member of the Society of the Sacred Heart in Cuba-who after her immigration to Miami, recognized a desperate need for child care services among newly exiled Cuban families striving for financial independence. Currently celebrating its 45th anniversary, the nonprofit organization provides for economically disadvantaged youths (six weeks to 12 years of age) through early childhood care, education, after-school care, summer programs, nutrition and wellness guidance, development assistance, and parent-focused instruction. Cento Mater caters to nearly 1,200 children and families annually at five accredited centers.
