  • Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, NC (1888PressRelease) September 04, 2013 - Starting September 1, 2013 the youngest patients at Central Carolina Hospital will receive 24/7 care from pediatric hospitalists with WakeMed Children's Hospital. These dedicated hospitalists - physicians who care for patients while they are in the hospital - are board-certified in pediatrics and provide the highest level of care for hospitalized children and infants.

In addition to treating children at Central Carolina Hospital for a variety of conditions, the WakeMed Children's hospitalist team will attend at high-risk deliveries and care for healthy newborns and infants in the special care nursery.

Community outreach and primary care are also vital elements of the hospitalist program. We as a team will work closely with community pediatricians to ensure care is well coordinated between local primary care physicians and Central Carolina Hospital.

Doug Doris, CEO Central Carolina Hospital said, "Local doctors are integral partners with the hospitalists, so they know that patients and their families are receiving excellent care."

The pediatric hospitalists will also provide on-site emergency department consultations at Central Carolina Hospital as well as telephone consultations with community healthcare providers.

"WakeMed is honored to be working alongside the Central Carolina Hospital team to care for infants and children from Lee County and the surrounding area," commented Mark Piehl, MD, MPH, medical director of WakeMed Children's Hospital. "Our partnership helps ensure local families will not have to travel far to receive the best care possible, anytime they need it."

Central Carolina Hospital recently designated a pediatric treatment area and held specialized pediatric training for staff by the WakeMed Children's team.
