  • Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, NC (1888PressRelease) April 12, 2014 - Central Carolina Hospital announced today that Wanda Collins, a nursing assistant, and Brenda Jones, a unit secretary, have been inducted into the Tenet Heroes Hall of Fame, Tenet Healthcare Corporation's highest honor for employees, at a ceremony in Dallas, Texas, on April 9.

When a patient with cerebral palsy was brought into the hospital with injuries, it was immediately clear to hospital staff that he could not return to his current home. Collins and Jones worked to make the hospital feel like home for the patient and cared for him like family.

Both Collins and Jones spent time with the patient, played catch with his favorite Nerf football, and brought him clothes so that he wouldn't have only his hospital gown to wear. The two even coordinated a schedule for washing his clothes, taking turns bringing them home to wash them and dropping them off at the hospital. At Christmas, Collins and Jones created a list of things the patient needed and orchestrated donations among hospital staff, throwing in some toys and games for fun. Jones spent her Christmas morning with the patient, spending quality time with him and helping him unwrap his gifts.

"Our Tenet Hero inductees represent the best of who we are at Tenet and what we do as healthcare providers in the communities we serve," said Trevor Fetter, Tenet's president and chief executive officer. "Brenda and Wanda's extraordinary character and dedication is an inspiration to us all."

Collins and Jones were two of seven employees inducted into the Tenet Heroes Hall of Fame. This year's recipients were chosen from more than 130 submissions. Tenet Heroes are nominated by their hospital's leadership team and selected based on their dedication to their patients, colleagues and communities. The Tenet Heroes Hall of Fame recognizes exceptional employees who demonstrate Tenet's values of quality, integrity, service, innovation and transparency.
