  • Los Angeles-Long Beach, CA (1888PressRelease) April 17, 2012 - The Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD) will host an Autism Insurance Funding Workshop on Saturday May 19, 2012 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for parents and caregivers to learn the changes that will take effect on July 1, 2012 due to SB 946. The informational seminar will be held at the CARD San Juan Capistrano office, located at 27127 Calle Arroyo, Suite 1921, San Juan Capistrano, California. Light refreshments will be served.

SB 946 mandates insurance companies to cover ABA therapy for children with an autism spectrum disorder. Many families will be relieved of the financial burden autism brings and many others will be able to seek treatment for their loved ones that suffer from the disorder. HealthNet and Cigna are two companies that will provide coverage prior to July 1.

"CARD is one of the world's largest organizations treating individuals with autism spectrum disorders using state-of-the-art therapy and we are excited about the insurance relief this mandate will bring to many families," said Managing Supervisor Jennifer Griffith.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in every 88 children in America is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, making autism more prevalent than pediatric cancer, juvenile diabetes and childhood AIDS combined. Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder that is marked by the presence of impaired social interaction and communication and a restricted repertoire of activities and interests.

"The insurance workshop will be a great opportunity for parents to ask questions and receive effective strategies to maximize their benefits," said Griffith.
