  • (1888PressRelease) August 03, 2012 - Visitors to the Bentonville Battlefield in Four Oaks, North Carolina, can now use their mobile phones to learn more about the battle fought in March 1865 that covered 6,000 acres. Guests to the battlefield can dial the tour number on park signs and follow the prompts to navigate through a self-guided tour of the historic structures. The cell phone tour is powered by OnCell, a mobile tour technology provider that works with cultural sites and institutions to make exhibit content accessible through mobile devices.

"We are not able to spend time with visitors on the battlefield with the exception of scheduled groups and this is where the OnCell tour really pays dividends," said Donny Taylor, Historic Site Manager. "The visitor can get an excellent learning experience and understanding of the ebb and flow of the battle, the Harper House, Harper family cemetery and monument area even after hours and on days the site is closed."

Currently, guests to the Battlefield can use the cell phone tour to learn about the Junior Reserves, the Cole Plantation, the Mower's Charge, the Morris Farm, the Harper House, Morgan's Stand and the Monument Area.

"We get great feedback in terms of sites visited, time of visit, length of calls and home state of the visitor. In the near future, we hope to add four more interpretive stops to the seven we now have available on the cell tour."
