  • (1888PressRelease) December 22, 2011 - Lee A. Surkin, MD is the first medical practice in the state of North Carolina to offer Provent Sleep Apnea Therapy, an innovative, non-invasive treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) to patients in Greenville and throughout North Carolina. Cleared by the US FDA in 2008, Provent Therapy is a simple and effective new treatment option for obstructive sleep apnea. Provent Therapy utilizes the patient's own breathing to provide clinically proven results in the treatment of OSA.

CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) is currently the gold standard for treatment of OSA and is extremely effective at treating OSA when worn as directed. However, up to half of all patients are not compliant with CPAP therapy due to the cumbersome nature of the treatment. Provent Therapy was developed to help patients who cannot tolerate CPAP therapy and may benefit from the small non-invasive and effective technology Provent Therapy provides.

"I believe that the availability of Provent Therapy in our area will tremendously impact people living with OSA who are not currently treating their disease and are looking for alternatives," said Lee A. Surkin, MD of Carolina Sleep, PA.

A Yale educated, triple board certified physician with a Masters in Nutrition practices integrative cardiology, sleep medicine and bariatric medicine, Lee A. In addition, Carolina Sleep was the first medical practice in the state of NC to offer Provent as an alternative treatment option for sleep apnea and snoring. "I am happy to be able to provide a new option for my patients with OSA. It is important that patients manage their OSA, so having another effective treatment option is good for my patients to help minimize the health problems associated with untreated OSA." Lee A. About Sleep Disordered Breathing

Sleep-disordered breathing describes a group of disorders characterized by interruptions in breathing that disrupt sleep and reduce oxygen levels in the body. OSA is the most common of these disorders. People with OSA stop breathing for ten seconds or longer, in some cases hundreds of times each night. They stop breathing because their airway is blocked, either with excess tissue or because the muscles, that typically keep the airway open, relax and collapse while sleeping, closing the airway. Often, people with sleep apnea don't know they have the condition, but realize that they snore and occasionally wake up gasping for air. Frequently it is their sleep partner who urges them to go to the doctor.

Sleep apnea can lead to fatigue, early morning headaches, irritability, lack of concentration and contributes to depression, learning and memory difficulties and sexual dysfunction. Importantly recent studies have shown that OSA is associated with high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, heart attack, stroke and diabetes.

    About ProventŪ Sleep Apnea Therapy

Provent is a prescription medical device used for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The device has been shown to be clinically effective in a series of peer reviewed studies. It is an easy to use, non-invasive and disposable treatment that works across mild, moderate, and severe OSA. Provent Therapy utilizes nasal expiratory positive airway pressure (EPAP) to keep a patient's airway open during sleep and has been clinically proven in numerous studies to reduce sleep apnea. It incorporates a novel MicroValve design that is placed over the nostrils and secured with hypoallergenic adhesive. During inhalation, the valve opens allowing nearly unobstructed airflow. During exhalation, the valve closes, limiting airflow through small openings, which increases expiratory pressure and keeps the airway open, preventing disruption in breathing.
