  • (1888PressRelease) March 09, 2013 - Mike Parish, Care UK Chief Executive, said: "Both Care UK and UK Specialist Hospitals have a very strong track record of exceptional levels of quality of care and of fantastic outcomes for patients.

"We know that the services we provide make a vital difference to the quality of life for a very large number of patients - and for their families. At the same time, the way in which we provide those services makes a positive contribution to the NHS.

"By bringing our expertise and services together, we will be able to continue to deliver the best patient experience in the most efficient way. Increased numbers of patients will have quicker access to elective care, an extended range of services and reduced waiting times. Both Care UK and UK Specialist Hospitals have clearly demonstrated the ability to reduce the time individual patients spend in hospital and to virtually eliminate the risk of infections such as MRSA or C. difficile."

UK Specialist Hospitals operates five treatment centres in the south west of England, which complement the six Care UK centres located in North East London, Southampton, Portsmouth, Gillingham, Chesterfield and Bradford.

In 2011, hospital performance experts Dr Foster rated Care UK's treatment centres to be the best performers for hip replacements in the country and UK Specialist Hospitals to be the best performer for knee replacements.

Fiona Calnan, UK Specialist Hospitals' Chief Executive Officer, will leave the organisation after eight years at the helm of the company.

Jon Weiner, former UK Specialist Hospitals Chairman, said: "Fiona has done an exceptional job as Chief Executive, in making UK Specialist Hospitals the success story it is today, building the business, delivering high quality healthcare for our patients and supporting innovation which has established UK Specialist Hospitals as a leading independent healthcare provider."

Fiona Calnan said: "As CEO I frequently received letters from patients praising the care and commitment they have experienced at UK Specialist Hospitals. Along with those patients I want to put my thanks on record to our dedicated employees with whom I have been proud to work. It has been a privilege to be part of this team."

Care UK's Managing Director Health Care, Jim Easton, who joined the organisation earlier this month, said: "We are bringing together two strong and successful organisations. This will ensure that our people and facilities have the investment and support they need to meet the needs of patients and commissioners. Working together we can share existing best practice and ensure future innovation and development. Commissioners currently working with UKSH can now get greater knowledge of and access to the wider range of health and social services provided by Care UK.

"I am excited to welcome UK Specialist Hospitals colleagues to the Care UK team. Working together we share a clear vision to provide centres which deliver great outcomes and experience for patients, and great value and responsiveness to commissioners."
