  • (1888PressRelease) March 01, 2019 - On January 24, 2019, the provincial government of Manitoba in Canada announced it will repeal the Bedding and other Upholstered or Stuffed Articles Regulation, 78/2004. The revocation will become effective on January 1, 2020.

The change means, from January 1, 2020, manufacturers, renovators, home hobby/craft operators and other person subject to the regulation, will no longer need to register with the Consumer Protection Office or label their products per the Bedding and Other Upholstered or Stuffed Articles Regulation. The intention is this change is to improve regulatory efficiency, better align regulations across jurisdictions, and remove technical barriers to trade.

The decision to repeal the regulation follows a similar announcement in Ontario in December 2018 – revoking Ontario Regulation 218/01: Upholstered and Stuffed Articles effective July 1, 2019. This leaves only Quebec with specific laws relating to bedding, upholstered and stuffed articles.

The prescriptions contained in the regulation will continue to be administered by Manitoba’s Consumer Protection Office until the repeal takes effect. Stakeholders should be aware products will continue to be subject to federal legislation, in the form of the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act and the Textile Labelling Act.
