  • (1888PressRelease) May 03, 2011 - Though RECs have varying business models, each is envisioned as a key support component for smaller physician practices in making the transition to EMR solutions.

There are currently 60 government-funded Regional Extension Centers across the U.S and GE Healthcare aligns with nearly half.

“We are very pleased to enter into a partnership with GE on behalf of CalHIPSO members,” said Speranza Avram, Executive Director, CalHIPSO. “We look forward to working together with GE to bring the benefits of a leading edge EHR product together with robust Regional Extension Center services for the benefit of our members around California.”

“Our group purchasing agreement with CalHIPSO is an example of GE Healthcare’s goal of supporting physicians in the adoption of electronic medical records to make a real difference in healthcare,” said Jim Corrigan, Vice President and General Manager of GE Healthcare IT. “We are pleased that CalHIPSO has chosen us to be a partner and we look forward to the opportunity to help deliver better health to California’s patient population.”

The original federal government grant funded the extension center’s operation at 90% for the first two years so that they could support a minimum of 1,042 providers in the selection, implementation and Meaningful Use of electronic medical records (EMRs). Under the federal government’s ARRA HITECH Act, physicians are eligible to receive anywhere from $44,000 to $65,000 by demonstrating Meaningful Use of a Certified EMR. Recently, this two-year period was extended to four- years, at the same 90% level, to allow more time for RECs to assist providers in their achievement of Meaningful Use.

With Centricity* Advance and Centricity Practice Solution, GE Healthcare is planning to continue building on its collaborative relationships throughout 2011 as RECs ramp up to support an increasing number of physicians.

Another REC that recently selected GE Healthcare is Tri-State Regional Health Information Technology Extension Center, which awarded GE Healthcare its Five Star vendor designation. Its highest level of recognition represents an elite performance demonstrated after competing in an unbiased request for proposal process and completing a rigorous third-party independent review.

“The Tri-State Regional Extension Center is pleased to partner with GE Healthcare to get our signed providers to meaningful use,” said David Groves, Executive Director of the Tri-State REC. “We evaluated many companies and believe that GE has a quality product with features and functionality that will allow our physicians to deliver quality care to their patients. We are also excited about the unique opportunity that exists to integrate GE Healthcare’s product into our Health Information Exchange and to use the system for new important initiatives, like the Beacon Community program and meaningful use.”

“We cannot overstate the importance of these relationships,” said Corrigan. “RECs align perfectly with GE’s stated ‘healthymagination’ goals to reduce system costs while improving access and the quality of care for providers everywhere. Improving small physician access to EMR is a vital step toward reaching that finish line in the very near future.”
