  • (1888PressRelease) November 23, 2011 - Exton, PA - Whether organizations are just considering IP version 6 (IPv6), in the planning phase, or actively deploying IPv6, effectively tracking and managing IPv4 and IPv6 address space is critical to successful deployment, said Tim Rooney, Product Management Director, BT, during remarks at the Federal Office Systems Exposition (FOSE) today. Rooney offered conferees his perspective on key IPv6 implementation challenges with a focus on IP address management in a presentation, "IPv4-IPv6 Address Management - Strategies for Success."

"Like it or not, IPv6 is coming," Rooney said. "The deployment of IPv6 in an agency's network will require management of two parallel protocols and address spaces for years to come." IPv6 support will be needed to provide ubiquitous Internet presence as the availability of IPv4 address space diminishes. "The co-existence of IPv6 with IPv4 allows customers to mitigate risk as they transition their IP networks," Rooney explained.

His presentation highlighted several solutions to help offset address management challenges while implementing IPv6 within an existing IPv4 network. Two government agency case studies highlighting key IP address management requirements and approaches taken to successfully address these challenges were also discussed. IPv6 is the standard that all federal agencies are required to implement by June 2008 by direction of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).

Rooney outlined a methodical approach to transitioning IP networks, enabling organizations to control the process based on their current and future operational requirements, applications, budget, organizational structure and resources. This recommended approach takes customers from their baseline, existing IPv4 addressing plan, through configuration, execution and tracking. In summary:
Chart a course knowing your starting point - i.e., baseline your current IPv4 address plan.

Overlay your IPv6 address deployment plan in accordance with your organization's IPv6 rollout timelines, including planned transition technologies.
Begin executing and tracking the plan by:

Allocating IPv6 space hierarchically while retaining logical association with corresponding IPv4 space and topology.

Implement IP address assignment policies, considering autoconfiguration and DHCPv6.

Manage your DNS configuration in support of IPv6 allocations and address assignment, as well as transition technologies.

Rooney concluded with a brief overview of BT Diamond IP's IPControl™ product, which enables organizations to comply with a disciplined IPv4/IPv6 planning and execution approach to mitigate risks and to adhere to timeline commitments.
