  • (1888PressRelease) October 02, 2019 - Brazil’s National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology (INMETRO) has approved the new Technical Regulation on Labelling of Textile Products issued by MERCOSUR.

INMETRO issued Ordinance No. 296 on June 12, 2019, with the regulation coming into effect upon publication.

Ordinance No. 296 approves MERCOSUR’s Technical Regulation on Labelling of Textile Products – MERCOSUR/GMC/RES. No. 62/18. This covers both products manufactured within MERCOSUR countries and those that are imported into the trade bloc.

The new labeling regulations apply to all products that contain at least 80% textile fibers and/or textile filaments by weight. Mandatory information must be conveyed through labels, stamps, stickers or similar, that are permanent, indelible, legible and clearly visible. As a minimum, this information must be in the language of the country where the product is being made available but can also be in other languages.

    Labeling must contain:
    1. Name, business name or trademark registered in the country of consumption and tax identification of a national manufacturer or importer
    2. Country of origin, preceded by the words “Hecho en (Made in)” or “Fabricado en (Manufactured in)”, or “Industria (Industry)” followed by the name of the country of origin
    3. Name of textile fibers or textile filaments with their contents expressed in percentage by mass
    4. Care labelling instructions
    5. Size or dimension, where appropriate

MERCOSUR – officially the Southern Common Market – is made up of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.
