  • (1888PressRelease) April 13, 2018 - The Brazilian government has issued plans to introduce a regulation similar to the European Union’s (EU) Directive on the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) for electrical and electronic equipment (EEE).

The announcement, made in late 2017, stems from the Ministry of the Environment’s (MMA) belief that hazardous substances in EEE are dangerous to both humans and the environment. The MMA produced and released a questionnaire in connection to the proposal, with responses accepted up until January 15, 2018. The results are now being considered.

Brazil is considering the inclusion of the following types of EEE:
    • Appliances, such as freezers, washing machines, electric ovens, vacuum cleaners, hair dryers, clocks and wrist watches
    • Computer and telecommunications equipment, such as desktops, notebooks and cell phones
    • Lighting equipment
    • Electrical and electronic tools
    • Toys, sports and leisure equipment
    • Medical devices

The proposal is currently being prepared and reviewed by the Department of Environmental Quality and Waste Management (DQAR), the MMA and the National Consumer Secretariat (Senacon) of the Ministry of Justice.

Stakeholders should remain up-to-date with Brazil’s intentions, in order to remain compliant with current legislation.
