  • (1888PressRelease) April 09, 2013 - The book deals with the role of communication in effective healthcare. The Book has been co-edited by Dr. Nagesh Rao, President & Director, Mudra Institute of Communications Ahmedabad (MICA) along with Dr. Alexander Thomas, Director & CEO, Bangalore Baptist Hospital (BBH). The book is divided into several chapters - written by different members of a hospital such as nurses, physicians, pharmacists, administrators and others based on their real - life experiences and in their own voice. The book talks about creating memorable experiences for patients, the communication barriers that exist in a hospital and ways of addressing them, challenges faced by healthcare providers in sharing bad news and many such relevant themes.

    The event saw the presence of the renowned Dr. HL Trivedi, Director-Professor at the Smt. GR Doshi and Smt KM Mehta Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Center (IKDRC) and Dr. HL Trivedi Institute of Transplantation Sciences (ITS) who was the Chief Guest.

    Speaking on the occasion, Dr. HL Trivedi spoke about the importance he attaches to communication between the doctor and the patients. He emphasized on the fact that the doctors need to give their undivided attention and empathy towards their patients when dealing with them and not be party to distractions like mobile phones. On the book, he said that the true test of a book is if it is read by people without asking them do so and he experienced that the book 'Communicate.Care.Cure.' was picked up by his colleagues and staff on their own - so he considers the book a success.

    The event was also graced by two special guests - Dr. Navdeep Mathur and Dr. Mukesh Bavishi.

    Dr. Navdeep Mathur, Assistant Professor at the Public Systems Group, Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad. (IIM-A) also mentioned reading the book and getting hooked on to it.

    Dr. Mukesh Bavishi, Renowned Ahmedabad based Gynec Surgeon spoke about the importance that he attaches to listening and not just asking questions to his patients. He emphasized on the fact that doctors need to listen to their patients even if the patients ask the same silly questions repeatedly. He also said that doctors should not get bored of for their work because each patient is special and expects to be treated that way.

    The co-author of the book, Dr. Nagesh Rao said that doctors and healthcare professionals must look at achieving the ideal balance between medical competence and communication skills. He also shared his experiences through which the book came into being - he guised a as a patient and used the system to understand its communication strengths and weaknesses. Dr. Nagesh Rao also stressed on the important role that each staff member ranging from the receptionist, physicians, pharmacists to the administrators plays when communicating with the patients and making them comfortable.
