  • (1888PressRelease) February 26, 2010 - GREENSBORO, NC - Raising the last truss of the building's roof toward a rare, clear-blue sky, construction workers reached a milestone recently on a new School of Education facility at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG).

University officials and construction executives joined mechanical, electrical, plumbing, steel, mason, fire-proofer and concrete tradespersons for a festive topping out ceremony, which traditionally signals that a construction project has reached its maximum height. The rite includes the ritual signing of the project's final steel beams.

"This building is a significant milestone for UNCG and the Department of Education," proclaimed Reid Taylor, UNCG Vice Chancellor of Business Affairs.

It will be the first building on campus built to the LEED Silver standards, according to university officials. At present, the School of Education is housed in a building built in 1926.

Construction of the five-story, 110,500-square-foot classroom and office building is a partnership of Hardin Construction Company's Raleigh office, and Rodgers Builders and Walter B. Davis, both of Charlotte. The building's features will include 19 classrooms, two lecture halls, sign language laboratories, and multimedia and technology labs.

Taylor also noted the favorable weather for the celebration. To date, the project has been challenged by more than 50 days of rain, winter precipitation and extreme temperatures. Even so, the project is scheduled for completion, on time, in January 2011.
