  • (1888PressRelease) November 26, 2012 - ABOUT THE BOOK:
Nobody has fought harder for a dignified, lively and honourable theatre in Wales than Dedwydd Jones, the author of this angry book. As playwright, as polemicist, as irrepressible arguer, he has himself been a living exemplar of what a theatrical tradition ought to be.

His opponents have been varied and many, but in particular he has always tilted his lance against the bureaucratic pillars of what passes as the theatrical Establishment in Wales.

It seems to me that there are only two legitimate purposes for Welsh national theatre. The first is to encourage the vitality of the indigenous culture, by performing Welsh plays of the past, and by giving a stage to Welsh playwrights and actors of the present. The second is to present to Welsh people plays of the highest possible international standards -- plays from the international repertoire. As I understand it, these are Dedwydd's convictions too, and his noble battle for them, against heavy odds and much discouragement, is an object lesson to us all.
