  • Salinas, CA (1888PressRelease) September 06, 2013 - As the only medical facility between the Monterey Peninsula and Cambria, the Big Sur Health Center is critical to the wellness of its community. "At the Big Sur Health Center, we are here for the expected, the unexpected and everything in between," said BSHC executive director and physician assistant Sharen Carey.

In August, Blue Shield of California Foundation (BSCF) announced that it is awarding $20,000 in core funding to the Big Sur Health Center to support their capacity to provide health care for low-income and uninsured residents in Monterey County. The grant is part of the Foundation's efforts to strengthen the network of those delivering care on the front lines and enable them to continue to serve millions of vulnerable Californians.

"As we prepare for health reform, it is critical that safety net providers have the flexible funds they need to respond to new opportunities and challenges ahead," said Peter Long, Ph.D., president and CEO of BSCF. "Strong community health centers like the Big Sur Health Center are paramount to ensuring that underserved patients aren't left behind."

Throughout the state, more than 200 community health centers and consortia continue to open their doors to California's underserved populations. These health centers provide essential services to nearly 3 million low-income patients each year, many of whom will remain uninsured even after health reform.
