  • Philadelphia, PA-NJ (1888PressRelease) December 06, 2013 - Louis Bencardino and members of the Bencardino Excavating safety committee have recently been trained on a new system for standardizing the classification of chemicals. The Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) meets new Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations and takes an international approach to chemical safety in the workplace.

Until recently, different countries had different regulations even for the same chemicals, creating confusion and expense in meeting such varying regulations. The GHS was proposed as a way to standardize and improve chemical safety worldwide.

The United States published its final GHS rule in 2012, requiring product manufacturers to adopt the standard by June 1, 2015 and product distributors to adopt it by Dec. 1, 2015. Workers, however, had to be trained by Dec. 1, 2013.

"We are eager to keep our employees up-to-date on industry standards and governmental regulations as they change," said Louis A. Bencardino, owner of Bencardino Excavating. "Keeping our crew and clients safe when we are on the jobsite or in our own facility is crucial a successful work day."

Members of the safety committee include: Kim Pierson, Chris Cannon, John Johnson, John Jennings and Joe Hathaway. They were the first to take the extensive training while all other employees were trained in time for the Dec. 1 deadline.
