Top Quote Angel Cano, President & COO of BBVA, presented this morning the upcoming expedition of the mountaineer Carlos Soria, who will begin on 20 March his climb of Annapurna (8,091 meters), his twelfth mountain peak of more than 8,000 meters. The 73 year-old mountaineer from Avila also plans to climb Mount Dhaulagiri if conditions permit, which would bring him one step closer to his dream of scaling th End Quote
  • (1888PressRelease) March 05, 2012 - Throughout the presentation, Ángel Cano showed his pride in the collaboration and in the identification of shared competitive values of BBVA and Carlos Soria: "For us, this is not just another sponsorship, but rather a very special sponsorship, a sponsorship of values. Carlos Soria's success lies not only in his sporting achievements, but in the way he is inspiring thousands of people."

At the age of 73, Carlos Soria is becoming a true sports symbol, not only because of the challenge he is taking on, but because of his attitude to life. In the words of Ángel Cano, Soria "is an example of humility, integrity and excellence." He is an exceptional person who fits unbelievably well into the way we do things and the attitude we uphold at BBVA."

The mountaineer explained details of the expedition, which will officially begin on 20 March, although he will travel to Nepal on Monday, the 5th to undertake special altitude preparation: "We estimate that the expedition will last about two months. We'll begin with acclimatization, living at some 5,000 meters, and on about the 20th we'll begin the march towards Annapurna. If the weather allows us to climb up Annapurna relatively quickly, we'll try to take advantage of the fact that Dhaulagiri is nearby and climb that one too. It's really difficult, and it would be a dream to achieve, but we'll carry the permit in case we can give it a try. If not, we'll leave Dhaulagiri for next autumn."

Soria will be joined by nearly the entire team that accompanied him on his most recent expedition last autumn: three journalists who will be feeding the media with constant updates free of charge in the form of video, pictures and text. This time, they will also be joined by two BBVA employees, a woman from Madrid and a man from Chile, the winners in a drawing following a selection process which saw the participation of more than 7,000 bank employees throughout the world.

    Proyecto Sama

BBVA also presented its project of corporate responsibility related to the expedition of Carlos Soria, in which it will support an entrepreneur in the Nepalese town of Samagaon. Two members of ESADE will spend more than a month in the Himalayan town to conduct an on-site study to assist in setting up a company to carry out a project or entrepreneurial initiative to provide food, clothing and educational materials to more than 100 children who live at an altitude of 4,000 meters.

Valentín Giró, an ESADE collaborator and head of the project, said that "what BBVA is doing in Sama is a new way of doing things in corporate responsibility. The aim is for a remote community to obtain its own recurring economic resources. This is a challenge that can be met only with the support of a partner like BBVA."
