  • (1888PressRelease) August 25, 2012 - Ashbourne Derbyshire - Bayliss Autovents manufactures and market a mechanism called an Autovent that automatically opens a greenhouse window when the weather becomes warm.

With climate change influencing many areas of life it is no less important for gardeners and horticulturists. Across the world the need for automatic greenhouse ventilation is growing due to the dramatic changes in temperature which can affect the delicate plants and seeds normally housed in a greenhouse.

Now with the advent of the autovent being readily available around the world, commercial and amateur growers have the opportunity to take steps to protect their seedlings and delicate plants from excessive heat and the consequent problems that it causes. Not only that, but they do not have to get out of their chair to control the temperature in their greenhouse as it is done automatically to a temperature set by the greenhouse owner.

What Does A Bayliss Auto Vent Do? An auto-vent opens and closes a hinged vent automatically using energy from the warmth of the sun or the surrounding air. The hotter it gets, the wider it opens the vent to allow cooling air in form the outside.

One happy customer says, "No longer do I have to decide whether to leave the ventilators open a little on warm summer nights or if it's safe to open them on cold autumn mornings before I go to work. It's all taken care of automatically and with perfect efficiency by a set of Bayliss Autovents."

Autovents are not 'throw away' items and are designed and tested to last many years. However, each and every part of a Bayliss Autovent can be serviced should the need arise, and the website carries spares for all their current units as well as many earlier models.

How Does A Greenhouse Autovent Work?
A strong metal tube contains a mineral wax, which expands with heat. This pushes a piston, which opens the auto vent via a balanced linkage. As the temperature drops, the wax shrinks and a strong stainless steel spring closes the vent and resets the piston. The temperature at which the autovent opens is pre-determined by the gardener or horticulturist, as they know their plants best and what temperature suits their growing needs.

Today their units are exported all over the world: to the USA, Canada, Northern Europe, Australia and New Zealand, and are used for all sorts of applications that need automatic ventilation, not just greenhouses! They have been fitted in conservatories, radar cabinets, chicken hatcheries, pig weaner kennels, swimming pools, equestrian rings, and one has even been fitted in the engine room of the Thames Barrier.

They can also offer bespoke designs for more specific requirements, and have recently been involved designing a prototype for a National Trust project in the south of England, opening heavy sliding roof windows in a Victorian design conservatory. This project has proved very successful and has enabled a previously dilapidated structure to be restored to its full glory for enjoyment of future generations of visitors and plant growers.
