Batteries Must Be Registered to IS 16046:2015 in India after August 31, 2017

Top Quote Battery manufacturers supplying India must be registered to IS 16046:2015 after August 31, 2017. Until this date both IS 16046:2012 and IS 16046:2015 will be accepted. End Quote
  • (1888PressRelease) August 26, 2017 - The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) issued CMD-3/16:16046 in December 2016. This ruling extended the period during which registration to either IS 16046:2012 or IS 16046:2015 would be concurrently accepted for batteries. This period ends on August 31, 2017.

IS 16046:2015 has only been in common use since March 2016, despite being an option for manufacturers for some time. The 2012 version was used by many manufacturers because of a lack of accredited laboratories. In the end, BIS extended the compliance date for the 2015 version, allowing concurrent use of both IS 16046:2012 and IS 16046:2015. This was because, as the deadline for registration to the 2015 version approached, a perfect storm was created with manufacturers trying to get their batteries registered and laboratories applying to become accredited by BIS to the 2015 version of IS 16046.

Rather than allow a situation where batteries could not be shipped, India extended its compliance deadline for the 2015 version of the standard and continued to accept the 2012 version. This period of extension is now expiring and manufacturers must now be registered to IS 16046:2015 or risk cancellation of their BIS registration.
