  • (1888PressRelease) October 06, 2010 - Presented for the first time in 2009 as an innovative excipient, Soluplus has now won the Silver Innovation Award at CPhI worldwide, the Convention on Pharmaceutical Ingredients and Intermediates.

BASF’s Soluplus helps customers in the pharmaceutical industry develop and produce innovative drug products containing active ingredients that could not have been formulated with conventional excipients. Soluplus is especially designed for pharmaceuticals produced by hot melt extrusion. The technology is becoming increasingly important in drug development and production because it is suitable for formulating novel drug substances, which are in many cases barely soluble and poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. In hot melt extrusion, the individual ingredients of a medicine are mixed and melted at high temperatures in an extruder with polymers, e.g. Soluplus, being added. This allows active pharmaceutical ingredients to dissolve in the polymer yielding what are called solid solutions. These enable poorly soluble active ingredients with otherwise low bioavailability to be administered in tablet form.

With its polymer chemistry expertise and clear commitment to developing new pharmaceutical excipients, BASF contributes significantly to its customers’ success. Its excipients business launches at least one new product to the market each year. Martin Widmann, head of Pharma Ingredients and Services, said: “We are extremely proud to have won this award because it confirms BASF’s role as the excipients innovator in this industry.” BASF is one of the few remaining manufacturers who proactively research new and innovative solutions and routinely launch their products in the marketplace.
