The conference will be focused on providing physicians in the Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Benito County areas with the tools and information needed to implement an Electronic Health Record (EHR). Avancé IT professionals will be educating those physicians who currently do not have an EHR system on how they can get started.

    Speaker: Kimley Mitchell-El Avancé IT Solutions LLC
    Kimley, a 19 year veteran of the healthcare industry, is a dynamic and results-focused principal consultant and COO of Avancé IT Solutions, has a record of achievement, with complex system implementation and streamlined application deployment resulting in scalable user friendly application usability. Kimley sharpen her skills as a consultant by working at IBM and some of the key health IT firms in the US. She has proven competencies in improving organizational productivity through the development and implementation of clinical technologies that foster operating synergies and facilitate lasting and positive change. She is acknowledged for her ability to lead small and large teams while keeping unit cohesion, mission and deliverables in sync. Kimley is recognized for providing sound advisory expertise for executive leadership teams. Her primary focus is customer satisfaction and knowledge transfer and excellent deliverables.

    Key Note Speaker: Betsy L. Thompson, MD, DrPH, Chief Medical Officer, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Region IX, San Francisco
    Dr. Thompson is the Chief Medical Officer for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Regional Office in San Francisco. In that position, Dr. Thompson serves as the chief CMS clinician for Region IX and as the principal liaison with professional organizations in the region with respect to quality improvement and health reform.
    Dr. Thompson has considerable experience in multiple facets of the health field. Dr. Thompson spent 10 years with CDC where she helped develop agency relationships with health plans and employers and worked with these new partners to improve the delivery of high-quality, cost-effective care. Dr. Thompson came to CMS after serving as Chief Medical Director of a non-profit health plan in rural Colorado. In that position, she worked closely with network physicians and facilities to foster quality improvement efforts. In 2009, Dr. Thompson was instrumental in getting Colorado state legislation passed to provide first dollar coverage for the most cost-effective preventive services.

    Throughout her career, Dr. Thompson has been an active member of many state, regional, and national committees focused on improving the quality of health care. Dr. Thompson is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Preventive Medicine. She also holds a doctorate in Health Policy from the University of Michigan.

    Session #3 Topic EHR Adoption Lessons Learned
    Speaker: Sharen Carey, PA-C, Executive Director, Physician Assistant, Board Certification: National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants
    Sharen started her career as a laboratory technician for Dr. Jonas Salk at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California. She became a licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist in 1969, working at Children's Hospital in San Francisco for 2 years, followed by 7 years in immunology and cancer research at the University of California at San Diego. With a keen interest in medicine, Sharen returned to school at the University of Southern California where she completed her Family Practice training in 1981. She has been a Physician Assistant at the Big Sur Health Center since 1987. In 2005 Sharen received the Outstanding Service Award from the California Academy of Physician Assistants. In 2006, she was honored as one of the Ten Outstanding Women of Monterey County. Sharen was Administrator of the Big Sur Health Center from 1990-1994 and 1998-2008. She became the center's first Executive Director following a strategic plan update and reorganization in early 2008. Sharen is a member of the California Academy of Physician Assistants. She is a member of the Allied Health Staff at Westland House.
