  • Miami, FL (1888PressRelease) August 19, 2011 - Peretz Chesal & Herrmann PL, announced today that Stephen Nagin has joined the firm as "Counsel" and that the 2011 edition of Super Lawyers has named Peretz Chesal & Herrmann the top Florida-based IP practice in its class. Prior to joining the firm, Nagin was selected by Super Lawyers 2011 as the top solo IP practitioner in the state.

"We are exceptionally pleased to welcome Stephen to the firm," said Steven Peretz, Managing Partner of Peretz Chesal & Herrmann. "Given his outstanding reputation and recent distinction by Super Lawyers, Stephen adds immeasurably to our roster of attorneys practicing at the top of their profession."

Nagin currently serves as Secretary/Treasurer of the Business Law Section of The Florida Bar and earlier in his career worked both in the Florida Attorney General's office and at the Federal Trade Commission - where he successfully represented the FTC in its first Equal Employment Opportunity action. He also was employed with the U.S. Attorney's Office in Washington, DC and holds Bar membership in both Florida and the District of Columbia.

In addition to his extensive trial experience, Nagin has written more than 60 articles and book chapters on consumer protection matters, antitrust topics and intellectual property law. He is board-certified by The Florida Bar in Antitrust & Trade Regulation Law and has chaired both the Antitrust & Trade Regulation Committee of The Florida Bar and the Bar's Antitrust & Trade Regulation Certification Committee in the Business Law Section. Nagin is also a former chairman of The Florida Bar's Intellectual Property Committee.

Nagin served as chairman of The Florida Bar Journal and Florida Bar News Editorial Board, and was appointed by the Chief Judge of the Florida Supreme Court to serve on a Special Task Force that crafted the Florida Rule of Civil Procedure, which covers complex litigation. Nagin was instrumental in making significant technology recommendations to the Court and also served as Editor-in-Chief of The Florida Bar Business Law Journal.

Nagin's career-long interest in technology stemmed from his experience in handling exceptionally large and protracted matters. He first wrote 20 years ago about increasing efficiency in law firms, at a time in which technology did not yet exist to fulfill the promise of today's computerized operations.

Nagin has received many commendations through the years, including Best Lawyers in America, Chambers USA America's Leading Lawyers in Business, Top Lawyers by the South Florida Legal Guide, Florida Trend's "Legal Elite" and the International Bar Association's Who's Who Legal. He has been "AV" rated by Martindale-Hubbell for more than 30 years.

Nagin is a graduate of the University of Miami and received his law degree from the University of Miami School of Law.

All three named partners in the firm - Steven Peretz, Michael Chesal and Leora Herrmann - are board-certified in Intellectual Property law by the Florida Bar and each have been recognized repeatedly by Super Lawyers.

Steven Peretz, who focuses his practice on trademark, copyright, and patent litigation in federal courts, has obtained several multi-million dollar verdicts and settlements for his clients, most recently a $4.5 million settlement of a patent and false advertising case in Texas. He is a former Chair of the Florida Bar's Intellectual Property Law Committee and is frequently invited to educate professional and business groups regarding the identification, protection and commercialization of intellectual property rights. Peretz received his bachelor's degree with High Honors in Economics from Wesleyan University and his law degree from the University of Chicago Law School.

Michael Chesal turned to intellectual property law after earning his degree in computer and information science. He devotes most of his time to helping businesses protect their trade names and brands. Chesal has been named by Super Lawyers on its list of "Top 100" lawyers in Florida. He previously served as chairman of the Florida Bar's Intellectual Property Law Committee and spearheaded a taskforce to update Florida's Trademark Act to respond to changes in federal law. Herrmann lectures frequently before law and other professional groups and is in the process of launching The Florida Trademark Blog, which will cover developments in trademark law of interest to Florida businesses and attorneys.
