  • (1888PressRelease) February 12, 2016 - Chicago, Illinois : Chicago Divorce Attorney Michael C. Craven spoke at the North Suburban Bar Association event on the recent changes to Illinois Family Law. Prior to July 21, 2015 when Governor Bruce Rauner signed Senate Bill 57 into law, the former Illinois Marriage and Dissolution of Marriage Act (IMDMA) had been in place since 1977. On January 1, 2016 the new law took effect and attorney Michael Craven took the opportunity to discuss these changes at a North Suburban Bar Association event. Their mission is to serve the needs of its membership by advancing professionalism ethical conduct, diversity, competence, practice development and collegiality in the legal professional. In addition, the North Suburban Bar Association, ("NSBA"), strives to ensure the fairness and accessibility of the legal system, promote public understanding and confidence in the justice system, and to work closely with the Circuit of Cook County to improve the administration of justice.

"Being asked to speak amongst my colleagues and peers about the recent Changes to Illinois Family Law and to share the podium with a judge and a fellow divorce attorney was an honor," says Craven. "Because these changes are vast I think it's important to discuss and highlight some of the major revisions that have taken place".

One of those revisions includes the elimination of fault grounds for divorce. Prior to the new law, obtaining a divorce based upon irreconcilable differences required a two year separation period unless both parties agreed to a lesser period that was at least six months. Now all divorces will be granted based upon irreconcilable differences where neither spouse is assigned blame for the dissolution. Senate Bill 57 also shifts focus to the best interest of the children involved by assigning parental responsibilities to avoid difficult custody battles. This update aims to provide children quality, safe, and healthy time with their parents based on which parent is able to make the most educated decision for a child.

Michael C. Craven has been practicing divorce and family law in the great Chicago area for over 30 years, and prides himself on giving his clients the individual attention they deserve. Michael has an intimate understanding of Illinois Family Law and the significance of the changes to the grounds of divorce, property division, child custody and parental relocation. Michael often shares updates on divorce and family law on his website and is asked to speak on these topics regularly.
