  • Rapid City, SD (1888PressRelease) September 21, 2010 - The Rapid City Convention & Visitors Bureau has selected Darren Paulson to receive the annual Black Hills Hero Award. As athletic director at Rapid City Central High School, Paulson has invited and helped host thousands of students, families and spectators to the city for athletic events. He is credited with bringing more than one million dollars in event spending to Rapid City. The award was presented on Saturday, Sept. 11, at the Chamber Annual Meeting.

"We are very proud to acknowledge a deserving man for his leadership, vision and hard work," says Michelle Lintz, executive director of the Rapid City Convention & Visitors Bureau. "Paulson has had a hand in securing Rapid City as a host for every South Dakota High School Activities Association state event with the exception of the state football tournament."

Over the 2009-2010 school year, Rapid City was the host of the AA boys basketball, boys tennis, cross country, class A wrestling and class A girls golf state tournaments. All-State Chorus and Orchestra were also held in Rapid City.

"I was very honored and humbled to receive the award. My hope for every event we host is to make it a good experience for the kids and fans," says Paulson. "Rapid City's accommodations, location and climate make it a great place for sporting events."

The Black Hills Hero Award is given to an organization or person who has been instrumental in bringing a large number of people to Rapid City and the Black Hills for an event or convention. The Rapid City Convention & Visitors Bureau has presented the award to deserving recipients since 1990.

"Without the great support we get from local residents who are proud of Rapid City and anxious to share it with their counterparts from all over the country and world, the Rapid City Convention & Visitors Bureau would not be as successful as it is today," says Lintz.

The Rapid City CVB is a division of the Rapid City Area Chamber of Commerce. The CVB's mission is to market the Rapid City area as a convention and leisure destination and to promote economic growth that will enhance the area for visitors and residents.
