After completing his schooling, Dr. Virella graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles, (UCLA), Neurosurgery Residency Program. He completed a complex resident fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation with Dr. Edward C. Benzel. Dr. Virella also completed a second fellowship in minimally invasive spine surgery with UCLA in Complex and Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery.

Dr. Virella's writing has appeared in publications such as The Spine Journal and Neurosurgery, the Official Journal of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.
