  • (1888PressRelease) November 21, 2013 - 2nd Annual LatAm HSE in Oil, Gas, Petrochemicals and Energy organized by Fleming Gulf Conferences got off to a good start today with The National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels - ANP delivering the keynote address at the Sheraton Barra Hotel & Suites - Rio de Janeiro. The summit is supported by ANP and The Institute for Safety and Health Management (ISHM). The summit gains importance in the region with recent discoveries of oil and gas deposits increasing the number of workers and investments for utilizing these reserves.

    Alex Garcia de Almeida, Regulatory Specialist at ANP delivered the key note address looking into Brazilian offshore safety regulation. The delegates got to know of the various efforts ANP is taking to avoid major accidents and ensure overall safety on offshore projects. Almeida has worked in implementation of Brazilian Offshore regulation (SGSO) audits by ANP, in the development of NR-30 regulation of Brazilian Ministry of Labour and is the coordinator of incident investigation and industry's performance monitoring work at Safety and Environmental Department of ANP.

    Jake van den Dries, Vice President HSE at Statoil South America followed Almeida to present on work culture and how its affected by new operations. He focussed on reasons for a majority of unexpected accidents and ways to avoid them. With an MSc in Risk Management & Safety Technology from Aston University, he has an experience of more than 20 years working for international oil companies across four continents.

    Jose Ferreira, Health Manager at Petrobras presented on the importance of having healthy and sound employees. A panel discussion on the same explored the risks from harmful materials and precautions to be taken to avoid exposure to them. Workers employed with firms dealing with hazardous chemicals are always vulnerable to health and safety concerns. Proper training and equipment is necessary to ensure effective handling of such chemicals. The session provided good insights to all the delegates on updated safety protocols.

    Tomorrow, day two of the conference will see presentations from Antonio Pinho, Executive Director, Environment, Health & Safety at GE Corporate - Brazil; Sandro França, Process Safety Specialist at Braskem S.A.; Stein Olav Skarbo, Principal Business Development Manager at DNV Software; Larry Curtis, Executive Director at the Institute of Safety and Health Management USA and Jorge Antônio Lopes, PhD, Corporate Environmental Processes Coordinator at Petrobras Transporte S/A. One of the key highlights of day two will be a presentation on Globally Harmonized System for Hazard Classification & Labeling - GHS and its benefits in ensuring health and safety of employers and employees. GHS provides information on hazards of various chemicals so that appropriate measures can be taken in dealing with them. The topic will be covered by Vicky Yilalis, Safety and Health Specialist at the United States Department of Labor. The forum has created an avenue to exchange view points concerning the future and simultaneously aim to benefit from the experience of other countries.
