  • (1888PressRelease) June 29, 2012 - Ampac, the world's leader in creative flexible packaging, has won an award for the recyclable No.2 PouchTM from the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) for Innovations in packaging.

The 2012 IFT Food Expo Innovation Awards program is designed to honor outstanding innovation in products, ingredients, applications, instruments, equipment, technology and services. Ampac's No.2 Pouch is made from a coextruded HDPE blend that yields a pouch with excellent stiffness and strength, and can be produced with a clear, opaque or matte finish. It is also approved for post-consumer recycling with plastic retail shopping bags, and is resealable.

This newest innovation is the first recyclable stand-up pouch produced by Ampac. The pouch is predominantly high density polyethylene resulting in Resin Identification Code Number 2 and HDPE+. Ampac also joined several large brands and retailers to include the No. 2 Pouch with in-store recycling using the How2Recycle "Store Drop-off" recycling label, developed by GreenBlue's Sustainable Packaging Coalition.

Responding to requests for a simple and understandable environmental message to consumers, Ampac created the No. 2 Pouch to be more compatible with existing post-consumer recycled waste streams. The No. 2 Pouch provides customers with a stand-up pouch alternative that has a greater potential for recycling compared to traditional laminated stand-up pouches. When clean and dry, the No. 2 Pouch can be recycled with plastic retail shopping bags collected at many stores across the U.S. in conjunction with the How2Recycle initiative
(www.how2recycle.info) and the American Chemistry Council's Flexible Film Recycling Group (www.plasticbagrecycling.org).

The No 2 Pouch is approved by Trex® Company, which processes 70% of all recycled plastic bags collected in the U.S. to create Trex® decking and railing products. Consumers could recycle clean, dry No. 2 Pouches at retail shopping bag collection stations.

Ampac's No.2 Pouch was chosen by IFT as one of four recipients of the qualified entries. The judging criteria included degree of innovation, solving a problem relevant to food science and technology, technical advancement, benefits to food manufacturers, and benefits to consumers and scientific merit. The following comments were given among the judges panel about the Ampac pouch: "Innovative problem-solving of an environmental problem."; "Although a pouch is not new, addition of ability to recycle enhances desirability, particularly if it has the strength and rigidity described."; "It is a great development allowing for recycling."

The IFT is a nonprofit scientific society whose mission is to advance the science of food and to ensure a safe and abundant food supply contributing to healthier people everywhere.

Sal Pellingra, Director of Innovation at Ampac said, "The IFT Innovation Award shows Ampac's dedication to sustainability in packaging. The No.2 Pouch provides a simple, easy-to-understand message- 'clean, dry and recycle on your next trip to the store'. In the maze of sustainable solutions, this simple message rings loud. We're pleased with the initial interest in this innovation and thankful for the award."
