  • (1888PressRelease) June 13, 2014 - Akshaya Patra, well known for its efforts in implementing Mid-Day Meals Scheme in India, is all set to launch #HungyForSchool campaign on 12 June, 2014. The campaign focuses on creating awareness on malnutrition among the school going children, necessity of education to children in India and efforts of The Akshaya Patra Foundation. With this campaign the organisation hopes to shed some light on the relationship between hunger and education and send out a message for people to reciprocate for the children in need.

India, a fast growing economy that is one among the G-20 major economies, needs to focus on factors like Human Development more than ever now. The life expectancy, education and standard of living of large population in India do not show growth on par with the economy. India's ranking when it comes to the status of hunger, malnutrition and completion of education among children is still a worry. Although there are many effective schemes that are in place and implemented by the Government of India and the efforts are commendable, there are still lot more to be done.

Malnutrition among school going children is a huge concern that needs immediate attention. In many cases children do not attend school as they need to work for one square meal a day. Hence, Akshaya Patra has incentivised food for education, and it hopes to reach out to every child in need of food and education across the country. Through initiatives like mid-day meals, the organisation does not only try to tackle issue that is malnutrition but also issues such as low school enrolment rates and high dropout rates.

Akshaya Patra is an implementing partner of Mid-Day Meals Scheme run by the Government of India. It reaches over 1.39 Million children from 10,631 Government and Government Aided schools across nine states of India. It has an ambitious mission of reaching 5 Million children by 2020.

With this campaign it hopes to augment its operations and reach. The campaign is named #HungryForSchool to underpin the idea that children in India are hungry for education and it is only lack of resources that is holding them back. The 90 days campaign has lot in store for its online stakeholders and is set to launch on 'World Day against Child Labour' - June 12th 2014.
