  • (1888PressRelease) March 16, 2013 - The director of the Instituto Cervantes, Víctor García de la Concha, and the director of the Royal Spanish Academy, José Manuel Blecua, have signed an agreement in Panama to govern their joint organisation of the Sixth International Congress of the Spanish Language, to be held in this Central American country in October. As a result of this agreement, signed in the presence of Lucy Molinar, Panama's Minister for Education, the event will be held from 20 to 23 October in the Panamanian capital.

This signing took place following a meeting on 25 February in which García de la Concha and Blecua met with Panama's First Lady, Marta Linares de Martinelli, to discuss preparations for this pan-Hispanic event, which will bring together over 200 experts and artists from all over the Spanish-speaking world to discuss the Spanish language and, in particular, the past, present and future of books written and published in Spanish.

This event will coincide with another commemorative event of great importance to the Republic of Panama - the 500th anniversary of the discovery of the Pacific Ocean by Spain's Vasco Núñez de Balboa, who gave his name to the country's national currency. In addition, the 23rd Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Spanish-speaking community is also scheduled to take place on 18 and 19 October.

The International Congress of the Spanish Language will be organised by the Instituto Cervantes, the Royal Spanish Academy, the Association of Spanish Language Academies, and the host country. The Instituto Cervantes will fulfil general secretariat responsibilities.

The Sixth International Congress of the Spanish Language will continue the work of the previous congresses held in Zacatecas (Mexico, 1997), Valladolid (Spain, 2001), Rosario (Argentina, 2004), Cartagena de Indias (Colombia, 2007) and Valparaíso (Chile, 2010, which in the end was held virtually online following the earthquake that hit this Andean country).
