  • (1888PressRelease) October 16, 2021 - In 2020, China’s foreign direct investment (FDI) was US$135 billion of which 0.91%, or US$1.23 billion was directed to the mining sector and 30.5% or US$41.17 billion was directed to the manufacturing sector.

    In 2019, China’s outward direct investment (ODI) was US$143 billion of which about 3.2%, or US$4.63 billion was directed to the mining sector and 13.4%, or US$19.11 billion was directed to the manufacturing sector.

    At the end of 2019, China’s outward direct investment stock amounted to US$1.98 trillion and mining and manufacturing accounted for 8.8% and 9.2% of the total stock and China’s three leading overseas acquisitions in the mining sector were Tianqi Lithium Corp’s US$4 billion acquisition of a 23.77% share in Chilean miner (SQM) Sociedad Quimica y Minera de Chile SA, the world’s leading producer of lithium from Canadian fertilizer company Nutrient Ltd.

    Zijin Mining Co., Ltd’s US$1.4 billion acquisition of 100% interest in Canadian miner Nevsun Resources Ltd which operated the Bisha copper and zinc mine in Eritrea and was developing the Timok copper and gold project in Serbia, Pengxin International Mining Co. Ltd’s US$1.1 billion acquisition of 100% interest of Singapore’s Agincourt Resources Pte Ltd which owned a 95% interest in Indonesia’s Martabe gold-silver mine and finally Advanced Proenergy’s US$1.2 billion acquisition and 100% interest of South Korea’s Vanderbild Gold Ltd.

    In 2019, China’s total value of exported goods was US$2.49 trillion and the value of mineral product exports accounted for 2.1% of total exports and base metals and the articles made of them accounted for 7.5%. The total value of imported goods was US$2.14 trillion and the value of mineral product imports accounted for 23.1% of the total imports and base metals and the articles made of them accounted for about 5%.
