  • New York, NY (1888PressRelease) April 24, 2013 - WHAT:
Adelphi University is proud to host Take Back the Night on the Garden City Campus, asserting that we will not tolerate violence of any kind in the world. The University community will march around the campus and join the international movement targetted to end sexual violence and to "create safe communities and respectful awareness." The event is open to public.

Take Back the Night first appeared in Europe in 1976 and has continued throughout the world as a sign of empowerment for women, men and children. Adelphi University first joined the movement last year. This year's event will include student performances, a keynote speech from Emily May, a co-founder of IhollaBack.Org, a speak-out where survivors of sexual assault are given the opportunity to share their stories, and finally a march around campus. During the march around campus, some individuals will participate in a "SlutWalk." SlutWalks began in 2011, as a direct response to Toronto police stating that women who do not want to get raped should not dress like sluts. Since then the movement has grown as a call to end victim-blaming worldwide.

As a part of the movement, student organizations and members of the Adelphi community will chalk-up the campus with quotes and also paint windows around campus.
