  • San Francisco, CA (1888PressRelease) January 23, 2013 - American Baptist Homes of the West is pleased to announce that Louise Rankin, formerly of the San Francisco office of the law firm Jones Day, stepped into the role of ABHOW general counsel effective Jan. 7, 2013.

Rankin comes to ABHOW with more than 30 years of legal experience and nearly a decade working with ABHOW's senior officers on bond financings. In her role as senior vice president and general counsel, she will be responsible for acquisitions, mergers and alliances, all legal matters, risk management and corporate compliance.

Since 1985 she has accumulated extensive experience serving as counsel to underwriters, borrowers, and bond issuers or as bond counsel in the realm of health care and long-term health care provider finance.

In addition, she has negotiated multistate system bond deals for a number of individual hospitals, nursing homes and continuing care retirement communities. The health care financing industry now widely accepts structures and covenants she developed.

Rankin graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of science in humanities from Mankato State University in Mankato, Minn., and earned her law degree from Vanderbilt University.

She helped Jones Day open the firm's Silicon Valley and San Francisco offices and served as a member of the firm's Health Care Practice Group. She and her husband, R. Ben Brown, have been married for 30 years and have two children, ages 25 and 22.

"We're delighted to welcome Louise to the ABHOW family as our new legal counsel," says David B. Ferguson, president and CEO of ABHOW. "Her depth of experience in litigation management, employment law and matters related to finance in the world of senior living communities, combined with her familiarity with how ABHOW does business, makes her an outstanding fit."

Rankin will replace David Grant, senior vice president and general counsel. Grant, who has been a member of the ABHOW family since 1998, is retiring after serving 14 years as chief counsel.

The overlap in Rankin's arrival and Grant's departure will allow for a smooth transition between the two as they work alongside each other before Grant's official March 1 retirement.

"David has distinguished himself not just among the leadership at ABHOW, but among retirement providers nationwide as well," Ferguson says. "He is a respected and valuable member of the ABHOW team, and we wish him and his family all the best as he begins this new chapter in his life."
