  • New York, NY (1888PressRelease) March 11, 2015 - Aaron School, a private K-12 school for children with learning disabilities, hosted a workshop titled "Technology and Screen Time for Children- Too Much of a Good Thing?" on Wednesday, 11th February, 2015 from 08:30 am to 09:30 am. The workshop was aimed at exploring common concerns that parents have about the use of technology by their children.

The workshop was hosted by guest speaker, Dr. Kirsten Cullen Sharma, a psychologist and co-director of the Early Childhood Clinical Service at the NYU Langone Medical Center. A nationally recognized expert in this field, Dr. Sharma helped dispel myths and provide sound advice to parents regarding safe and appropriate use of technology by children.

A research study published in 2013 by Common Sense Media, a San-Francisco based non-profit organization that provides education to families to promote safe use of technology by children, provides statistical measures of the drastic rise in the use of technology by young ones.

According to the study, 38% of children under two have used a mobile device for media as compared to 10% in 2011 and 75% of children aged 8 or under have access to some sort of a 'mobile' device such as smartphones and iPads.

During the workshop, Dr. Sharma stressed on the fact that using these devices is not necessarily perilous on its own. It is only excessive and unsupervised usage that may create problems.

She reminded parents of the educational component of several technological media and programs and advised parents to keep up their supervision of the apps or programs that their child may be using. Dr. Sharma also stressed on the importance of insuring that children get enough face-time with their family and peers in order to make sure that excessive use of technology does not hamper their social skills.

Aaron School families invited to the workshop exhibited interest and active participation and expressed later that several of their worries were dispelled owing to this workshop.

Aaron School caters to children with reading, writing, math, attention, sensory and/or social challenges.
