  • (1888PressRelease) November 07, 2008 - BBC Caribbean acclaimed ‘Green Guru’ Shireen Aga & her Hotel Mockingbird Hill partner, Barbara Walker, have just launched Jamaican Explorations (www.jamaicaexplorations.com) - a unique Jamaican tour website with a satisfying difference. It’s co-operative, independent and like the blogging ‘Wordpress’software it utilises, it is an open source project allowing those seeking ‘more than the beach’ on their Jamaican holiday the opportunity to enjoy a diverse selection of experiences that they can easily plug-in and play.

At launch the site will showcase a group of small Jamaican hoteliers whose ongoing alternative presentation of Jamaica has already successfully challenged the traditional perception of a 2-week holiday to the island.

The tours and packages available from this new website promote the diversity of the island and cater for those who seek a holiday that indulges their special interests and hobbies in a sustainable fashion whilst simultaneously promotes local Jamaican communities rather than compound tourism whose benefits are enjoyed by only a few.

Unlike traditional operators the site benefits from being able to ask questions direct to those ‘local hotel owners’ who will be co-organising the holiday and it anticipated that this ‘from the horse’s mouth approach’ will deliver tours booked that fully live up to the visitors expectations to deliver an experience a rich as Jamaica’s flora & fauna.

Visitors will be invited to spread their tourist dollars outside of the key known areas such as Montego Bay and head to the quieter lushness of the East of the island made famous in the 1950s by Errol Flynn and still enjoyed by the likes of Mick Jagger who has a villa in the area.

Here cultural excursions as part of these intimate tours & packages include guided hikes along the Rio Grande with local farmers, guided tours in Charles Town by Jamaica’s first anti-colonialists – The Maroons, led by Nanny who invented the legendary Jerk style of cooking and to coffee rambles up to meet Blue Mountain Coffee Estate Small Holders who grow the world’s most expensive coffee.

Barbara Walker of Hotel Mocking Bird Hill explained

“It is so exciting to be able to put into reality Jamaica’s motto– “Out of Many, One People”. The open source software that is available these days is very empowering for small hoteliers like ourselves and enables us to work together. Not only do we now have the means to present alternative Jamaican holiday ideas but as small hoteliers we have an alternative method of reaching potential customers without having to pay a third party agent commission for it.
