    Endorsements from the Book:
This book brings together the best of traditional dishes eaten in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa area in particular, and in the wider areas of Pakistan in general. It also combines some more modern dishes to reflect a nouveau Pakistani cuisine. It is unusual for a cookery book writer to have cooked all the dishes that they have written about. This is a great strength for this book.

    About the Author:
Vivian Khan's interest in Asian cookery began when she married her late-husband Barrie, after a six-month whirlwind courtship. His home was in the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan, now known as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and previously, pre-partition days, was a part of India, an area of the world that has always held a fascination for her.

Her first visit to Pakistan was in 1972 when her and her husband, Barrie, undertook an overland journey in a Land Rover. When they were thirty miles from her father-in-law's house, Barrie's brother them. He brought the bourka, the traditional outdoor wear for women, so Vivian followed tradition and arrived, bourka-clad, to her in-law's house in Bannu. They drew up at some imposing gates, and her brother-in-law jumped out and ushered anyone walking on the street nearby away. The solid gate was opened and she stepped in to the courtyard, family honour had been maintained, no one had set eyes on her! This was a new culture but Vivian settled and watched with curiosity and interest all that went on around her. As a Westerner, she was accorded more privileges than the locals, and was allowed to sit at the table with the men for meals whilst the other ladies of the house ate afterwards in their own dining room. She enjoyed the conversation and all accorded her the privilege of speaking English, not Pushto or Urdu which were the languages spoken locally.

When out in the bazaar, bourka-clad, it was interesting as she could see all that went on without anyone knowing who was under the bourka! The bazaar was a shopper's paradise and the food stalls and small restaurants within the bazaar sent out tantalising aromas. Their food was wonderful, like no other that she had ever tasted, and to this day, this type of food remains her favourite.
