  • Fort Lauderdale, FL (1888PressRelease) October 31, 2011 - WITI 's (Women In Technology International) South Florida Network will honor the recipients of the 2nd Annual WITI 'Women to Watch' Awards on November 30, 2011 at JM Family in Deerfield Beach, FL. Register at www.witi.com/southflorida.

    We will also have the honor to listen Dr. Alicia Abella is Executive Director of the Innovative Services Research Department at AT&T Labs Research.

    The purpose of the WITI South Florida's Women to Watch award is to honor and recognize rising as well as existing leaders within their Company and Community.

    Are criterions for selecting the honorees are:
    A strong performer driving business achievement within their organization.
    A leader both within their organization and outside of their organization.
    A person engaged in outside activities in the community.

    WITI Founder and Chairwoman, explains, "Historically, too many notable achievements by women have gone unrecognized. WITI was founded to provide a platform to recognize women whose contributions to technology and science and commitment to advancing women can be celebrated and recorded. WITI Networks are an extension of these endeavors and serve to honor and connect women directly in their local communities."

    WITI Hall of Fame Recipient Dr. Alicia Abella is Executive Director of the Innovative Services Research Department at AT&T Labs Research, where she manages a group of multi-disciplinary technical staff specializing in data mining, user interfaces, IPTV, mobile services, and SIP/VoIP technology, and also chairs the AT&T Labs Fellowship program.

    As well, Dr. Abella is Executive Vice President for the Young Science Achievers Program, where she encourages high school-aged women and minority students to pursue careers in science and engineering. Dr. Abella has been recognized as one of the Top Five Women of the Year by Hispanic Business Magazine and was the recipient of the Pioneer Award from the Women of Color STEM Conference and the Latinos in Information Sciences and Technology Association Leadership of the Year Award.

    The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute also recognized her for her contributions in the area of green technology. Dr. Abella holds a B.S. degree from New York University, and an M.S., M.Phil, and Ph.D. from Columbia University. In May 2011, she was appointed by Barack Obama to the President's Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics.
