  • (1888PressRelease) May 24, 2023 - Gift of Life Marrow Registry will host a donor recruitment drive for leukemia patient Izaack Powell, a 21-year-old, A-league soccer player. Powell is in urgent need of a blood stem cell or bone marrow transplant in order to survive.

The event will be held Monday, May 29, 2023 at the Florida Jerk Festival at John Prince Park, 2700 6th Ave., South, Lake Worth, Fla., from 2:00 - 8:00 pm.

Powell, who resides in Australia, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in 2021. He doesn’t have a matching donor in his family, causing him to turn to the community for support. He is of Jamaican and Australian descent and his best chance of finding a match is with someone of similar ancestry. His family is working with Gift of Life to encourage the Jamaican-American community, in particular, to join in the effort to save his life.

To join the the Gift of Life Marrow Registry, donors simply swab the inside of their cheeks and complete a registration questionnaire. 18 to 35-year-olds who are in good health (the ideal demographic for successful transplants) are especially urged to attend and join.

Those unable to attend in person can request a swab kit to be delivered at home by visiting giftoflife.org/Izaack. To hold a donor recruitment drive, email Chris Camacho at ccamacho ( @ ) giftoflife dot org dot

You may also support Powell by donating to his family’s fundraising “Donor Circle” campaign. Every contribution helps Gift of Life add new donors to the registry and goes directly toward testing swab kits in order to find matches for Powell and other patients in need of matches.

“If you’re healthy and of the right age, please consider joining the registry to help save Izaack or another patient battling blood cancer, said Gift of Life’s Chief Strategy and Operations Officer Marti Freund.

Today, 90% of donations use blood stem cells, collected from the arm in a process similar to donating blood platelets. Only 10% of transplants use bone marrow, which is collected from the hip bone and is a short outpatient procedure, usually requested for pediatric patients.
