  • Norfolk-Virginia Beach-Newport News, VA-NC (1888PressRelease) October 04, 2012 - Chevrolet has announced that the 2014 Chevrolet Impala will no longer offer the bench seat option (one long three-seater) for the front seat row of the car. The Impala was the only remaining passenger car in North American production to offer this feature. The passing of this fad will pave the way for Chevy's newly redesigned flagship sedan.

While the extinction of this notorious drive-in cuddling seat seems like a big deal, not too many car buyers will be sad to see it go. No other cars but the Impala offered it last year, and of the customers who purchased the Impala, only one in ten elected to get the bench seat option. Instead, most customers opt for the bucket seat option for the front seat, limiting their sedan to five seats. Customers who want more room for passengers typically go with a crossover, van, or SUV, rather than a six-seater sedan.

Clay Dean, GM director of design, stated, "A lot of people prefer bucket seats because they're sporty, even in models that aren't sports cars. Our customers also appreciate having the center console as a convenient place to store their phone and other personal items."

For those who do appreciate the nostalgia of front bench seats, Chevrolet pickup trucks and sport utilities will still feature them. And Chevrolet has not ruled out a resurrection of the bench seat. Dean said, "You never know, we might see bench seats re-emerge someday, possibly in very small cars like the EN-V urban mobility concept vehicle, in which the feeling of open space may be very desirable."
