  • (1888PressRelease) April 05, 2018 - Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia will host the 12th International Diabetes Federation Western Pacific Region Congress (IDF-WPR 2018), concurrently happening with the 10th Scientific Meeting of Asian Association for the Study of Diabetes (AASD), in Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), Malaysia, from 22 to 25 November 2018.

    The Congress is jointly organised by Diabetes Malaysia (DM), Malaysian Endocrine & Metabolic Society (MEMS), National Diabetes Institute (NADI) and Malaysian Diabetes Educators Society (MDES), hosted by the International Diabetes Federation Western Pacific Region (IDF WPR).

    The Congress Organising Committee Chairman, Prof Dato’ Dr Ikram Shah bin Ismail emphasised that IDF-WPR Congresses have been an important occasion where leading professionals, practitioners, researchers and experts in diabetes treatment will gather to update, share knowledge and speak on issues pertaining to diabetes - its prevention, management and control. IDF-WPR Congresses are traditionally attended by more than 3,000 participants.

    Highlighting the theme “Enhancing Knowledge & Skills – Transforming Diabetes Care”, IDF-WPR Congress 2018 provides three days of promising plenary and presidential / award lectures, oral and poster presentations, aiming to offer every participant a wonderful and fruitful experience.

    The International Diabetes Federation Western Pacific Region Congress is a regional Congress under International Diabetes Federation (IDF), held every 2 years in various parts of the Western Pacific region. The IDF Western Pacific Region (WPR) is the largest of the IDF Regions in terms of population and is the most diverse economically, politically and culturally.

    About Diabetes Malaysia (DM)
    Group of doctors and individuals wanted to set up an organisation with the aim of providing social services to diabetics and establish a centre for dissemination of information on diabetes. This group of people founded Persatuan Diabetes Malaysia (“PDM”), which was registered as a social association with the Registrar of Societies on 16. June 1983. PDM is now known officially as Diabetes Malaysia (DM).

    About Malaysian Endocrine & Metabolic Society (MEMS)
    Over the years MEMS has developed into a professional body, the objectives of which are to advance the interest and practice of endocrinology among the Malaysian medical fraternity and the public. Among its earlier activities was its infamous ‘road show’ where a small group of dedicated endocrinologists would travel around the country, from one state capital to another, conducting endocrine courses for the local doctors.

    Non-profit organisation managed by a Board of Trustees comprising representatives from the Malaysian Endocrine and Metabolic Society (MEMS), Malaysian Diabetes Association (PDM), Ministry of Health (MOH), Elected and Founding members.

    About Malaysia Diabetes Educators Society (MDES)
    The Malaysian Diabetes Educators Society was officially registered on 29th May 2007 as a National Non-Governmental Organization in Malaysia for healthcare professionals providing diabetes education and management. MDES aims to improve the quality of life for people affected by diabetes, as well as those who are at risk, by enhancing self-management skills through education and public awareness.
