He left South Africa before Apartheid and returned to see its end.
This real-life story is skilfully told to Andre Jacobs, who knew Louis Botha du Toit well and wrote this biographical account based on a series of interviews with him.

Andre Jacobs, the author of this biography, currently lives in South Africa. As a career diplomat, he has travelled widely and has a wide array of family, friends and professional contacts. "I hated those days. I still hardly dared to go out. The streets were full of servicemen, and Military Police always a step or two behind them. There were many South Africans in Cairo, and South Africa tends to be a place where everyone knows everyone. I was not quite a prisoner, of course, as Marianne and I used to go for beautiful walks in the evenings, but I was careful not to patronise any one café or any other kind of establishment too often, as this would inevitably lead to questions - and if I was evasive, suspicion. There was no formal reward for denouncing a deserter, but there were droves of shady characters that spent their days hanging round in cafés and on street corners. They would have been happy to do the authorities a good turn, in the hope of connivance at some future skulduggery."
