  • (1888PressRelease) March 18, 2014 - Los Angeles author GVR Corcillo's debut novel 'She Likes It Rough' recently won Best Indie Book 2013 and first place in the Humor category in the Rebecca's Reads Choice Awards. 'She Likes It Rough' is a romantic comedy about a 34-year-old woman who tries very hard to straighten up and fly right. The book is not erotica; the title is tongue-in-cheek and so titled because the heroine is always making it so hard on herself. Currently 'She Likes It Rough' has a 4.3 rating on Amazon with 35 reviews. During its free promotional days in December, it was consistently in the top 5 of free Kindle books in the romantic comedy and humor genres.

The inspiration for the story came from the Sylvester Stallone movie 'Daylight,' written by Leslie Bohem. The actor Viggo Mortensen plays an outdoor extremist who is also a businessman. "That sparked the idea for my hero Jack, an adrenaline junkie who designs gear for outdoor sporting adventures," Corcillo explains. "The inspiration for the heroine Lisa was, well, I have this, uh, friend, yeah, a friend, and she's afraid of so many things - heights, big animals, loud noises, wearing the wrong thing, what people think of her..."

Corcillo likens her novel to Helen Fielding's 'Bridget Jones's Diary,' particularly the playful irreverence of the story as the main character struggles to become the hero of her own life. She is careful to clarify that unlike Fielding's heroine, Lisa Flyte in 'She Likes It Rough' is never out to get a guy or get married. "Her prime directive is to make her life count for something, to become more significant. Her interaction with the hero Jack is a big part of that journey, but Lisa never focuses on her single status as something she needs to remedy."

The decision to commit to her writing began at her 20th class reunion, where she caught up with a former classmate who encouraged her to self-publish. The idea seemed daunting - and thrilling - to her. "I thought, 'Really? Could I be so bold?'" He sent her a list of steps to get started. "I was tired of living paycheck to paycheck and figured I had nothing to lose," she laughs. Now she spends every waking minute she can spare, and many minutes when she admits she should probably be sleeping, working on her writing career.

Corcillo lives in North Hollywood with her husband, TV writer Ron Corcillo. She works as a test prep tutor to pay her bills until she makes it big. "I finally understand that getting rich and famous isn't as important as simply loving the work I do every day. The best thing for me is that I am a writer. I am living my dream."

RebeccasReads.com established the Choice Awards program to pay tribute to authors who are self-published or have had their books published by a subsidy publisher, small press, university press, or independent book publisher.

GVR Corcillo's romantic comedy, 'She Likes It Rough,' is available online at Amazon, Smashwords, Barnes & Noble, Sony Reader Store, and the Apple iTunes Store in print and digital formats. The book begins a two-week virtual book tour with Reading Addiction on April 7.
