  • (1888PressRelease) February 21, 2016 - "Robot Wake" by Ed Green, About the Book: When an unidentified robot swoops in to save the crew of a scientific ship sinking in arctic waters, the world's press are quick to speculate on the mysterious machine's intentions. Almost overnight, the news is flooded with report after report of an enigmatic figure, which appears to be averting one disaster after another. In a flurry of locations scattered all over the globe, the robot confronts all manner of environmental catastrophes. As more and more people are saved from certain doom, the machine's profile is elevated to that of a hero; a modern day saviour. But the origins and modus operandi of the mechanical philanthrope remain shrouded in secrecy...

    Excerpt from the Book:
"Nature may be custodian of the Earth, or Gaia the spirit that inhabits the planet's core, but she too has proven to be vulnerable. With only limited powers to intervene, she has permitted the humans to gain the upper hand. If they are allowed to continue steering the planet on its current path, it will soon become a barren, sterile desert; a monoculture of people, and food for people, and very little else. A protector is needed, to counter the species' selfish determination to spread and colonise and grow at all costs. It would take a powerful force indeed to act on Nature's behalf, and to redress this imbalance. Could this be his calling, now that his makers have thrown him so unequivocally from their nest?

The cooling snow has worked its magic, bringing the Robot's core temperature down to safe levels. In a flutter of stubby wings, the Ptarmigan flaps out of sight - presumably back to her exposed nest out on the tundra. Before preparing to return to orbit, the Robot takes a moment to say goodbye to his makeshift hideaway.

He offers thanks to the moon - satellite, ancient spirit - for concealing him, for healing him, and for providing him with a new purpose. In return, he accepts the mantle of Protector. He vows to shield the planet from the threat imposed by its human inhabitants, and to defend at all costs the sacred balance that still exists in some small corners - the harmony that he has only witnessed in the places no person has trodden."
