  • (1888PressRelease) December 16, 2016 - "Once Bittern" by R. E. Buckhurst (ISBN #978-1785077067), About the Book : Jim Daily is a successful sales executive from London who loses his job, his wife and his home. Determined not to lose his children as well, he sets out on a journey of discovery and soul searching to establish himself as a man and restore his personal pride.

We follow his amusing and at times heartfelt, frustrations as he tries to put his life back together. Set in the rural idyll of the Norfolk Broads in a time before mobile phones and the internet, Jim Daily's journey twists and winds through the intricacies of different dialects and cultures that co-exist in a slow-moving holiday village environment.

A journey of laughter, love and relationships where all is not as quiet or as straight forward as it seems.

    Excerpt from the book:
"Ann was laughing as she pulled the foaming beers taking her time to let it settle before drawing some more. 'D'you hear that?' Speaking and laughing at the same time, while topping up each glass, 'Bill Salter was run off the road earlier today. Nobody was hurt so it serves him right. Him and that flash car. He reckons he's going to swing for him if he catches him.'

'Talk about me feigning sickness you look white as a sheet. You all roight?'
"Day by day it gets worse Peter, I am now being chased by Bill Salter as well as Mr Stone. I'll just have this one and go. Before anything else happens."

Jim lay there that night not able to sleep. It was all going around in his head. He felt useless, and an abject failure. His marriage was over, he couldn't see his children, he couldn't get a job, he owed money he couldn't repay and at least two people were after him. He tried to think of positive things and a way out of his predicament but couldn't. The more he lay there thinking the bigger the problems seemed to get.

"Why me? Oh God why me? Someone help me please. Show me what to do."

I took the book on holiday and really enjoyed it. Coming from Norfolk I loved the way the local accent was used. A good story and it was difficult to put the book down after reading a few pages. R. E. Buckhurst really brought the characters to life. Overall a good read.

What a delightful tale of life in and around Norfolk. Brings back so many happy memories of my youth - lots of fish meals and getting lost around the square with just a compass!
