“Farms and Fortunes” by Michael Godwin

A fascinating autobiographical account of a Wiltshire arable farmer

    About the Book:
The writing of this story began some years ago as a record of my life for my grandchildren to read should they become interested in our family history.

Beginning in 1939 until my seventieth year in 2009; my childhood in the Somerset countryside on a small mixed farm; my failed architectural ambitions, and my successful career as a Wiltshire arable and beef farmer, and a witness to the technical advancement and the galloping mechanisation in agriculture.

The story includes my involvement in several farms and eventually joining Lloyds of London as a "Name". Inevitably, it includes my interests in world affairs, aircraft and military flying and my opportunities to travel and meet other farmers in their own environments. Michael describes his wife's tragic mental illness and the usual ups and downs of an interesting and busy life.

His son now owns and manages an arable farm, together with a commercial grain storage enterprise. At completion, he was persuaded that the story was "an interesting and historical document" and should be published as such.

A book recommended to me from a friend. An unexpectedly interesting and absorbing story. Difficult to put down once started

This book is a warmly told tale of mostly rural life and how one man set out, with encouragement and help from his in-laws, to acquire his own farm and use his youthful energy and ambition to make a great deal of money, which he then invested in Lloyds of London. This gave him a few good years until the crash came and he lost everything- but not his sense of humour. Told very much as he speaks it makes easy and interesting reading - except perhaps where he gets carried away describing the mechanics of farm machinery, but then I'm a woman!

A remarkable account of a remarkable life. On the face of it this wouldn't be everyone's first choice of a good read, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Mr. Godwin has obviously kept a detailed diary over the years, and has managed to create a wonderfully entertaining tale full of interesting facts about running a farm, candidly describing the highs and lows of his family life, and the perils of being a Lloyds of London "Name". It's one thing to have led an interesting life, but quite another to be able to tell it in such a charming way.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great tale of farm life in past decades and much more.
    23 August 2011

I loved this book, I did not think I would find farm life so interesting, but Michael Godwin writes with humour and a light touch, even when describing his unfortunate involvement with the 'Lloyds debacle'.

It makes a fascinating read, one does not want to put it down until the last page.
