$131 Million Bachelor Quarters Designed by RJC Architects and Joseph Wong Design Lauded
$131 Million Camp Pendleton BEQ Lauded as Project of the Year.
- San Diego, CA (1888PressRelease) May 12, 2012 - A recently completed $131 million Bachelor Enlisted Quarters (BEQ) at Camp Pendleton has been named a 2012 Project of the Year by the American Public Works Association, San Diego/Imperial Chapter. The award was presented at the APWA's annual awards luncheon, held at Hilton San Diego in Mission Valley on May 10, 2012.
San Diego architectural firms RJC Architects and Joseph Wong Design Associates, in a design/build team with Hensel Phelps Soltek Joint Venture, completed the award-winning project - recognized in the "Structures, $75 Million and Above Category" - in January 2012. Other key members of the team on this project include Berger ABAM, structural engineer; MA Engineers, mechanical engineer; Elen Engineers, electrical engineer; KEMA, sustainable design consulting; and Aon Fire Protection.
Certified by the U.S. Green Building Council as a LEED Gold facility, the 483,573- square-foot, four-story quarters include four barracks that accommodate 1,588 Marine Corps personnel. According to James Robbins, principal of RJC, the project was designed to provide the best quality of life for enlisted personnel while minimizing long term ownership costs to the Marines. "The design is especially unique in that nearly one mile of reclaimed water main was installed to reduce water usage," he said. The project also features photovoltaic systems at each BEQ that supply a total of 215 kilowatts of power - 6.5 percent of the total electrical load. In addition, daytime lighting is optimized through the use of clerestory windows. High-efficiency lighting further maximizes energy conservation.
The APWA Public Works Project of the Year Awards were established to promote excellence in public works projects by recognizing the successful partnership between the managing agency, the architect/engineering team and the contractor.
"We are very pleased and proud APWA selected this project to receive this important award," said Joseph Wong, managing principal for Joseph Wong Design Associates. "The complex was carefully designed to provide enlisted Marines with facilities to participate in a variety of activities, including passive and active sports and training functions."
Each barracks is equipped with a community center complete with a theater, training lounge, multipurpose rooms, central laundry, kitchen and Internet café. Recreational facilities include basketball, volleyball and tennis courts, shade pavilions, horseshoe pits, a central amphitheater and outdoor covered areas with built-in barbecues. An extensive walkway system is situated throughout the property, and a pedestrian bridge crosses an existing wetlands/stream in compliance with strict environmental protection requirements.
According to Robbins the building design also provides aesthetically pleasing facades with projections and recesses, changes in exterior color and textures of the concrete block walls and varying roof profiles.
