  • New York, NY (1888PressRelease) April 16, 2009 - EPA BED BUG SUMMIT LOOKS AT WAYS TO STOP A GROWING EPIDEMIC IN THE U.S.

Non-Chemical Pesticide Treatments, Including the Use of Heat, are Important and Effective Weapons in the Battle

The Environmental Protection Agency wrapped up a two day summit in Washington, DC that was put together to find ways to combat a problem that is plaguing many parts of the country: bed bugs.

Bed bugs were all but eliminated in the 1950s, but have made a comeback after the carcinogenic pesticide DDT was banned. While pesticide companies are encouraging the broader use of toxic chemicals to kill bed bugs, a California pest control company has patented what has already proven to be a highly effective, non-chemical way to kill bed bugs and their eggs.

“It’s tremendously important that the EPA has recognized the serious and growing bed bug epidemic,” said David Hedman, CEO of ThermaPure(R)". “It’s even more important that the summit considered alternatives to the spraying of highly toxic chemicals into the environment, including the use of heat.”

Scientific studies have shown that superheated air – normally in the range of 130 to 150 degrees Fahrenheit – is deadly to bed bugs and their eggs. University studies have also shown that, when applied properly by trained technicians, the ThermaPureHeat process(R) is 100% effective.

“Why would anyone want to spray toxic chemicals and powders onto their mattresses and bedding when there is a completely safe and extremely effective non-chemical tool available?” added Hedman. “The ThermaPureHeat process penetrates into the cracks and crevices of structures – places that pesticides normally cannot reach. And ThermaPure has the added benefit of serving to pasteurize the structure by destroying or denaturing viruses, allergens, odors and other insects.”

ThermaPureHeat uses heat produced by clean-burning propane and/or energy efficient infrared heaters along with HEPA filtration to kill insects and “Pasteurize” the structure. The ThermaPure process has now been applied to thousands of structures across North America that normally would have been treated with pesticide gases, sparing the environment from an estimated two million pounds of pesticide.

“I think the ThermaPure technology is the most important new technology to emerge in pest control in modern times, and is the most important integrated pest management tool that I know of,” said Mike Masterson, host of the Discovery Channel TV program “Verminators”.
