  • Cincinnati, OH-KY-IN (1888PressRelease) January 16, 2008 - Pastor J. Stephen Conn, after forty-seven years of Christian service, has just released a new book about what he calls “The most incredible experience I have had in a lifetime of ministry.” The Devil Called Collect: The Exorcism of Jessica Leek, is the true story of a young woman, possessed by a legion of demons, who is dramatically set free by the power of Jesus’ name. Conn is no wide-eyed demon chaser who sees a devil behind every bush. “I have dealt with thousands of people,” he said, “who were tempted, harassed and oppressed of the devil, but only this once did I encounter a full-fledged case of demonic possession. Most ministers never have such an experience.”

The story begins on March 11, 1980, when Conn was serving as a pastor in Augusta, Georgia. He was awakened at two o’clock in the morning by a long distance collect telephone call from a young woman who was desperately pleading for help. Afraid, alone, and deeply involved in Witchcraft and the occult, all Jessica knew about the man she was calling was that his number had been given to her by a stranger while she was hitch-hiking. As she spoke numerous deep, guttural, demonic voices unexpectedly came from her lips – blaspheming, cursing, and identifying themselves by name.

Pastor Conn and his youth minister, Paul Dana Walker, embarked on a three-day search for the young woman which took them first to Aiken, SC, and then 125 miles away to Savannah, GA. They found Jessica and brought her back to the Senior Pastor’s home, little knowing the frightening ordeal which lay before them. In the week-long exorcism Jessica attempted suicide twice and attacked the ministers on several occasions – once with an eight inch butcher knife. According to Conn, scores of demonic spirits manifested themselves through their victim, each with a different name and an uncannily distinct personality. The demons identified themselves by such names as Ariel, Orion, Beelzebub, and Moloch. Unlike many tales of those who are said to be possessed of devils, this one ends in a very hard fought but complete victory as the demons were cast out by calling on the power of Jesus’ blood.

Conn said that although he has shared this story a few times over the years he has waited until now to publish it because he knew many people would not believe it. Also, he says, “Some aspects of the experience contradicted my theological understanding.” He admits that he still does not have all the answers, and doesn’t believe any does, so he offers this book “as a testimony and not as a thesis.”

Another person who participated in the exorcism, Grady Mosley, was a college student and a member of Conn’s church at the time of Jessica’s deliverance. Mosley, who is today a United Methodist pastor, wrote a foreword to the book. In it he says, “I still remember that night in the Conn’s family room as clearly as I did then. I can see the facial expressions, hear the voices and sounds, and stunningly remember the power of prayer as we witnessed demonic powers subjected to the name and the blood of Jesus.”

The author, J. Stephen Conn, has wide experience in the ministry, having been ordained by and pastored churches in three major Evangelical denominations: Church of God, Assemblies of God and Southern Baptist. He is the award-winning author of six books and for 15 years was a syndicated columnist, appearing in sixty newspapers throughout the United States. Now retired from full-time ministry, Conn lives with his wife, Karen, in Loveland, Ohio. He devotes his time to travel, writing and guest speaking.
