  • (1888PressRelease) May 25, 2007 - Vegetarians worried about rennet in Mars Bars and battery eggs in their cakes should also be careful about what’s in their bathroom say 100% Vegetarian Lush Cosmetics.

Tallow (hard animal fat) is commonly used in soaps, but Lush prefer to use a vegetable base. And not only this, there are many other animal ingredients lurking in your bathroom products to look out for … The Vegan Society list shellac (crushed insects) which may be used in nail varnish; civet (from anal pouch of civet cat); musk (from male musk deer); chitin (from insects and crustacea) and keratin (protein from hair, horn, hoof and feathers) may be used in shampoos, conditioners and skin care products; gelatine (from animal bones, skin and hide) and elastin (from meat) are also from animals.

Instead, Lush use masses of fresh fruit and vegetables in its products, organic where possible. Using whole fresh produce in skincare means all the vitamins, minerals and enzymes are delivered directly onto the skin when they are at their most potent and effective. In addition, the bath and body care is made with the very best blends of vegetable oils, plants and clays and the finest essential oils all served up in mouthwatering formulations to help you look good and feel great.

And even if your cosmetics are free from animal ingredients they may still have caused suffering through animal testing. Because Lush products are designed for humans, they are tested on humans. And Lush also go that little bit further with their own policy against animal testing: Lush will not buy any ingredient from any supplier that tests any of its materials on any animals for any purpose. This policy is unique in its field and is pioneering a new way to stop animal tests for cosmetics.

Lush Cosmetics offer products that are 100% vegetarian, in all their stores nationwide. Not just for National Vegetarian Week (21st-27th May 2007), but all year round. And not only do Lush offer a 100% Vegetarian delectable menu of products, but 76% of them are also suitable for Vegans and approved by The Vegan Society. All vegan friendly products are clearly marked, to make it even easier to avoid all animal products, such as yoghurt, eggs and honey, if you so wish.

This includes the brand new HAAGEN BATH ballistic (£2.50), a creamy pink ballistic that is slow-fizzing and contains dark cocoa powder and Fair Trade cocoa butter to really moisturise and soften the skin.

Other Lush classics that are both Vegetarian and Vegan include:
MA BAR bubble bar (£2.20) … containing calming begamot oil and de-stressing orange oil, along with cocoa powder and all topped off with a sugar cube. It’s so good, you’ll want more than one a day!

CUPCAKE face mask (£3.00 for 100g) … made with deep cleansing rhassoull mud, softening cocoa butter and stimulating spearmint oil and peppermint oil. Great for problem skins and for calming irritation.

Lush are also taking part in this years www.bristolveganfayre.co.uk , where vegans and ethical consumers can find anything and everything for their chosen lifestyle.

And finally, Lush’s sister brand B Never Too Busy To Be Beautiful is the only UK company to offer an entire colour cosmetics range that is suitable for vegans. Try the new Bossy cream eye shadow (£10.00), in electric pink or, perhaps for a fragrance treat, the new Crème Anglaise body lotion (£17.95), for serious vanilla laden, nourishing indulgence for the skin.
